Should the government do more to encourage young people to vote in elections?
2023年度 第3回英検準1級ライティング問題より
I believe that the government does not need to try harder to encourage young people to vote in elections. I have two reasons for this.
The first reason is that even if young people vote, it is unlikely to change the results.
In Japan, the elderly population is much larger, so even if many young people vote, it would be difficult for them to have a significant impact on the election results. Because of this, many young people may feel that their vote will not make a difference and choose not to go to the polls. Furthermore, some may think that spending time with family, studying, or working is more beneficial for them than going to vote.
The second reason is that young people are busy.
In today’s society, many people are occupied with work and household responsibilities every day. For young people, finding the time to go to vote can be challenging. Even if the government tries hard to encourage them, it is not easy to significantly increase the voting rate among young people.
For these reasons, I believe the government does not need to make additional efforts to encourage young people to vote in elections. (196 words)

政府は、若者が選挙で投票することを奨励するためにもっとすべきですか？
私は、政府が若者に選挙で投票するようもっと頑張る必要はないと思います。その理由を2つ説明します。
1つ目は、若者が投票しても結果が変わりにくいからです。日本では高齢者の人数が多いため、若者がたくさん投票しても、選挙の結果に大きな影響を与えるのは難しいです。そのため、自分の一票では何も変わらないと感じて投票に行かない若者が多いのではないでしょうか。また、選挙に行く時間があるなら、家族と過ごしたり、勉強や仕事に時間を使う方が良いと考える人も多いと思います。
2つ目は、若者は忙しいからです。今の社会では、仕事や家のことで毎日忙しい人が多いです。その中で、選挙に行くための時間を作るのは難しい場合があります。政府がどんなに頑張っても、若者の投票率を大きく上げることは簡単ではないでしょう。
このような理由から、私は政府が若者に選挙で投票することをもっと強く勧める必要はないと考えます。
