Is it acceptable to keep animals to in zoos?
2018年度第1回英検準1級ライティング問題より
I am against keeping animals in zoos for two reasons.
The first reason is animal rights. Animals have the right to live freely in their natural habitat, but zoos take away this freedom. In zoos, animals are kept in small spaces and cannot move around as they would in the wild. This can cause them stress and affect their well-being. Some people say that zoos provide food and safety, but most wild animals can find food on their own. Keeping them in captivity for human benefit is not fair to the animals.
The second reason is educational value. Some argue that zoos help people learn about animals, but seeing animals in cages does not teach us about their natural behavior. Watching documentaries or visiting wildlife reserves can provide a better understanding of how animals live in the wild. Learning about animals in their natural environment is more meaningful than observing them in unnatural conditions.
For these reasons, I am against keeping animals in zoos. (164 words)

動物園で動物を飼うことは許されますか？
私は動物園で動物を飼うことに反対です。その理由は二つあります。
一つ目の理由は動物の権利です。動物には自然の生息地で自由に生きる権利がありますが、動物園はその自由を奪ってしまいます。動物園では狭いスペースに閉じ込められ、野生のように自由に動くことができません。そのため、ストレスがたまり、健康にも悪影響を与えることがあります。動物園では餌が与えられ安全だと言う人もいますが、ほとんどの野生動物は自分で餌を見つけることができます。人間の利益のために動物を閉じ込めるのは公平ではありません。
二つ目の理由は教育的価値です。動物園は動物について学ぶのに役立つと言う人もいますが、檻の中の動物を見ても、本来の生態を知ることはできません。ドキュメンタリーを見たり、野生動物の保護区を訪れたりするほうが、動物の本当の生き方を学ぶのに適しています。自然の中での動物の姿を知ることのほうが、動物園で不自然な環境にいる姿を見るよりも価値があると考えます。
以上の理由から、私は動物園で動物を飼うことに反対です。
